    Description

Item up for sale is an original, October 10th, 1961, partial ( 16 page ) edition of the New York Daily News newspaper; the lead story of the day concerned baseball's New York Yankees, who had just won their 19th championship in 39 seasons by beating the Cincinnati Reds four games to one. Leading up to the victory, the Yankees picked up their 26th American League pennant. The season would be one for the book, as the Mighty Mickey Mantle went toe to toe with the strapping young North Dakotan novice, as both vied for the homerun record set by the " Bambino, " Babe Ruth, in 1927, while a member of the famed " Murderer's Row team. " The injury prone Mantle would stumble late in the race, while Maris kept chopping away. Mantle would remain stalled at 54, while missing several crucial games. Maris would take all the marbles passing the Babe's standard of 60 homers, by adding one more and finishing out the regular season at 61. The race would be the stuff of legends. This is a partial newspaper of 16 pages out of the original 72. But, it includes a great front and rear page. Several of the pages are detached, it includes the main story of the game, a pictorial centerfold and several other articles. This is a great super rare item.
