Description

Item up for sale is the original, partial, ( 8 pages,) June 26th, 1962, edition of the New York Daily News newspaper; the lead story of the day was of the landmark Supreme Court decision that effectively banned prayer in America's Public Schoolrooms. The Supreme Court held that prayer in the schoolroom was a violation of the constitutional wall that separated church and state. The 6-1 decision would reverse a ruling by the New York State Court of Appeals that upheld prayer in the classroom, in New Hyde Park, Long Island, where the case had first originated. Famed, New York, Catholic Cardinal Spellman would denounce the decision and even President John F. Kennedy would voice his disapproval but support the court's decision. Kennedy would take the moral high ground and say that the decision would not preclude family prayer in one's own home. N.Y., State Education Commissioner, James E. Allen, was set to order the immediate cessation of prayer in the classroom. This is a historic newspaper, that is in poor condition. It has a total of 8 pages out of the original 56. The complete story is contained on page # 2 in five articles. All pages are separated. This newspaper has a banner headline of the ruling that is suitable for framing.
