Description

Fine example of Rose Gonzales early work, a bowl 4" tall 6.5" diameter depicting Avanyu The Water Serpent.
Beautiful early signature, signed "Rose".
Rose was born in San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico in 1900. In 1920, she married Roberto Gonzales and moved to San Ildefonso Pueblo near Sante Fe, New Mexico where black on black pottery was being made by Native Americans of the Tewa tribe. Traditional name for San Ildefonso is "
Po-woh-ge-oweenge, meaning "where the water cuts through".
Rose Gonzales was taught how to make black on black pottery by her Mother-in-Law Ramona Sanchez Gonzales (1885-1934).
I am not an expert. I believe this to be an early example of Rose Gonzales' work as her later work involved a new technique innovation of carving the design details into the clay.
Feel free to offer additional information if you wish.
"As Is" "As Found" condition, appears to be stable and sound. One line that may be a hairline crack though I think it is a surface detail due to age, appears near mouth of Water Serpent, then possibly continues above. No sign of hairline all the way to rim which is why I don't think it is a hairline crack. I am not an expert, examine all photos with magnifier feature and ask all questions before placing bids.
